I think two of the most important things a responsible pet owner can do is to spay or neuter, and to let go when it's time. She'd had a hard life before she was my cat, having been abandoned and then shuffled from home to home, and I made her a promise that I'd take care of her until the end. And as difficult as it was, it was the right and best thing to do for her.
