The Kindle would definitely work for that. The phone app is really convenient if you are out and about and see a book you'd like to read later - you fire up the app and download a sample (you can even send it to the Kindle to be downloaded the next time it connects). Every time I start up my Kindle and turn on the wireless, I get a flurry of samples that I had previously decided looked interesting.
