As [livejournal.com profile] aliki demanded..."TALK!"

(Anyone who knows me in non-virtual space probably knows that I do plenty of that. So here's the story.)

We arrived very late on Friday. Dad had already gone to bed. We took Mom out for ice cream at the 24 hour Baskin Robbins, and then did a bit of driving around the town. Got home and crawled off to bed.

By the way, in case anyone remembers my post about it from last week...separate bedrooms, TYVM. I'm actually glad about it-it would have felt uncomfortable any other way.

I woke up at about a quarter to seven on Saturday, stayed in bed for about an hour more, and traipsed downstairs, to find Dad in the kitchen with Cayne, chatting away. The three of us sat around, and ate bagels and talked. Mom and my sister joined us just in time to go to the first choice wedding site. It really deserved to be the first choice...it had all the things I wanted-space for an outdoor ceremony, on the water, single event space, lots of windows. The event planner there was really helpful, and very flexible, and really will work with us to do just about anything we want. She suggested, among other things, for the coctail hour, a "mashed potato bar"-and no one was surprised when my mother pantomimed flinging potatoes on the spoon...an event repeated throughout my childhood, with actual potatoes. So we settled on the Thatched Cottage (which is neither thatched, nor a cottage) and had to come up with a date. I would love an outdoor ceremony, if the weather holds, (though considering my track record, that's unlikely) and though we had originally talked about May 22, we decided that the weather would be a bit warmer, and the greenery outdoors would fill in a bit more if we pushed it off til June. So we went for June 12. Details settled, we headed off for some lunch. Mom and Cayne and I then drove around a bit, checked out some other places, and whatnot, picked up massive quantities of seafood, and headed home. We had dinner (leftover chinese) and hung out, and Cayne headed home. Mom and sister and I spent the evening playing Rummy-O-my brother and his girlfriend joined us later.

Sunday...Mom and I ran some errands, had the mandatory mother-daughter fight (I wish she would respect it when I say explicitly "You are violating my boundaries. Stop. This conversation is over.) We came home, convinced my sister, who wasn't feeling well to go home, and started dinner. Cayne showed up a bit later, as did my brother and his girlfriend. Dinner was a seafod extravaganza. Was fun.

Family did their best to make Cayne feel comfortable. I hope they did okay. Mom made sure to have Mountain Dew in the house for him, they teased him for being bearded, for being Canadian...Dad finally had a new audience for his most awful jokes...the ones that every suitor hears, and is polite about, but that make the rest of us groan.

Mom showed Cayne the most awful, evil, mean and cruel way to torment me. Worse than tentacles. Worse than eating things with heads. Really.

Despite the fact that it would have been impossible not to stress over the weekend, it wasn't awful. In fact, it was rather good.

Course now that this is a June wedding, instead of May, apparently there are a lot of things that we have to do much more quickly...photographer, music, that sort of thing. I was honestly amazed that they had any June dates left, but perhaps that's the advantage of a Sunday wedding rather than a Saturday.

Next projects include some sort of engagement anouncement/save the date design-probably magnets. Find photographer. Choose china and "silver" (mom suggests doing this sooner, because when announcements go out, people will apparently buy us things. Figure out music. Find and order dress. Ask if Eileen will do hair for me on a Sunday.

I thought maybe I'd get a break. Apparently not. It's just more things to do.

I really like the idea of the 'Save the Date' magnets. Between weddings and showers this season, my fridge overfloweth with the larger reminders. I assume you're thinking roughly business card sized? -sM

Ooh-- totally awesome post. I'm such a gossipy giddy girl recently, what with my wedding coming up in one month and one day. I am walking down hallways in class just GRINNING at strangers and they think I'm a weirdo but I can't help it. Love makes you stupid like that.

For June weddings, notification to guests well ahead of time is definitely a must. One of our friends is attending 12 weddings this summer. Another is attending 8. The sheer number is mind-boggling. We are having 4 guests not attend our wedding because they'll be attending another June 12 wedding, and another 2 who are skipping other weddings to attend ours. It's insane!

You did make a wise choice in picking a Sunday instead of Saturday. That helps with everybody's schedules and pocketbooks (honestly!). And definitely try and secure vendors as early as possible, especially if you have certain requirements (e.g. you really want a certain photographer, you really like a band, etc). We were on a tight budget so we REALLY have to secure some vendors that worked from home (less overhead = they charge less). Best of luck.

I think, once things are more under control, I'm going to declare a wedding moratorium, and take a weekend and not do or read anything wedding related.

This is the absolute best present you can give yourself. I'm still happy about having set aside one full week in April for a re-enactment event which kept me from thinking about ANYTHING wedding-related. It was a godsend. Really and truly.

We have a button maker that can do magnets. It makes them 2.5 inches across. If you're interested, I can run some numbers and see if it makes more sense economically.

The other possibility would be to buy ink jet business card blanks and the magnetic backs, and print them yourself.

And I still owe you email. Bad Toni, no biscut!

If you're interested in the button magnets, we (Tanda) can do them. Which reminds me, I need to kick the Ooooh, Shiney officer and see how's she's doing on the yarmulke.
