Of rings and things...

Cayne has apparently lost his wedding ring. He stopped at a fast food drive through on his way home, and at some point, realized that his ring was gone. It may have come off in his car. It may have come off at work. He's going to look in both places tomorrow, as well as consult with the security people to see if anyone turns one in, but I suspect it's gone.

I feel like I'm expected to be angry about it, but I'm not. I'm sad and disappointed, but not angry. It happens. He doesn't love me any less, he wasn't taking it off to cheat or mess around with someone else.

He feels awful and I wish I could make him feel better.

You've Lost Your Wedding Ring?, a .01-act play, by Huey:

[curtain rises]

"You know what this means, don't you?"
"No, what?"
"It means we have to get married again!"
"Seriously? The whole thing? The hall, the guests, the food, everything?"
"No, it can be more low-key this time. We could just skip to the honeymoon."
"Where do you want to go?"
"Figurative honeymoon. We go to bed now, and fuck like weasels on double-espresso."
"Ah. And this punishment for losing my ring is supposed to dissuade me from losing it again?"
"Shut up and kiss me, you knob"
NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM

[curtain falls]

This post made me realized I'd lost my wedding ring, too (slipped it off during the birth to protect my hand from squeezes, then forgot to put it back on, and couldn't find it in my pocket). And then managed to find it again, thankfully - it somehow ended up in my desk drawer. I hope his is as easily found.

I worry about losing my occasionally. You can get new ones re-blessed and suchlike, as I understand it.

A surprising number of women I know have lost their engagement rings, usually skiing or playing volleyball. Did he lose weight recently? I've lost all sorts of rings when I lose weight.

How the hell does a ring fall off?

Other then that, you are handling it awesomely. That's the best perspective I've ever heard from someone on this matter. :)

Plus, it's Cayne. We've established that the guy can lose his wallet and keys, to the extent that you end up dragging the sheets back out of the washing machine in case his wallet was in there by mistake. He's very clearly a forgetful wuzzie, and you love him because of who he is.

Doesn't make it any the less annoying when you're dealing with the outcome of the forgetfulness (laptop on the train, anyone?), but it's a thing I have to remind myself with Richard. If he didn't have a head full of wool because he's too busy thinking about the interesting earthworm he saw at lunchtime, he wouldn't be him.
