A long time ago, in a strange conversation, about nudity on film,melaniesue72 described Harvey Keitel's penis or Kate Winslet's breasts (I don't recall the specifics anymore...we were talking about both of them) as "like a train wrek-you don't want to look but you have to."

I'm having that sort of day.

Normally, I look at pictures of STD infected genitalia and it's no big deal. It's part of what I do. Today, in the assistant director of education's office I actually turned around and said "where's your trashcan?"

I came inches from losing my lunch over the pictures today. The eye...the gonorrhea in the eye just got me. Reverse peristalsis set in.

All in all a bad sign...especially when I've got to go teach STD 101 classes tonight...

And today it makes me squirmy that I'm teaching it to kids who were born when I was in high school...

I can't watch Harvey Keitel anymore without wanting to yell "Train Wreck" though.

Part of my job is to run a six session educational group for adolescents and young adults...right now I've got two groups at teen centers-one on Friday night and one on Saturday night. I have a schedule that tends to change in six or seven week cycles...

My job is HIV/STD/Substance abuse prevention education with adolescents and young adults...primarlity with high risk youth of color (using, abusing, in recovery or at high risk for substance abuse) I go to detention centers, shelters, teen center, probation programs, after school programs, etc. to do this. I run my six week group, train and supervise peer educators who do outreach and presentations and I do HIV testing and counseling.

This would be the reason for the occasional off color comment about work...usually something explicitly sexual, or odd. Things most people don't do or say at work, like the discussion about my speculum.

It's one of those things I can't imagine not doing. I've been involved in HIV prevention work for 12 years-since I was 16. I managed to turn it into a profession, and I'm lucky that way. Working with high risk populations comes with its own challenges...I worry sometimes how I (an educated white woman) am percieved going into communities of color, often with lower income and lower education levels. But I keep an open mind and a sense of humor about what I do. Plus I have a versatile vocabulary for sex acts, which amuses my audience. They crack up almost every time they hear me say "bust a nut."
