I made a quick phone call home tonight, to get a couple of answers to random questions...looking for an English word for bodega (which I couldn't think of, oddly enough) and asking if Mom wanted me to bring home cigarettes for my brother next week (I pay half what he does, and while I'd rather not enable his cigarette habit, if it keeps him from smoking other things, I'd be happy to...that whole harm reduction thing.)

So I get Dad on the phone, then he passes it to Mom so I could ask Mom the second question...then Mom passes the phone back to Dad.

Dad is currently working at the High School for Health Professions and Human Services (or something like that.) He asks me what my travel plans for Thanksgiving are. I explain them, and he's thrilled...because he wants me to go in and meet with some administrators at his school about what I do and about how they could do a better job bringing human services into their curriculum and integrate human services and health professions.

This is a HUGE deal. This is my Dad showing me that he respects me as a professional...that he's okay with what I do and even pleased with it. My Dad is wonderful, but struggles with the success of his daughters, and difficulties of his sons. He tries hard, but he has a hard time letting go of some of the gender roles and expectations that he grew up with. And his asking me to do this says huge things.

As important as it is to be respected by my sites and colleagues, I can't even say how meaningful the support and respect of my parents is. This means so much to me.
