The Purple Cow story...
May. 16th, 2003 12:24 amBackground information...
melebeth and I had a rather inauspicious beginning to our friendship. It doesn't need explaining, you just need to know this to understand the rest of the story.
A couple of years ago, before I moved to NoVa, [1] but when I was down here visiting Michael, S. took the time to organize a foo so that I could meet the NoVans[2] who I'd been IRCing with, but hadn't yet met. Being me, I took the time to write a thank you card to S. for taking the time to put things together. The card had a purple cow on the front.
So we're at the place where the foo is taking place, and I give S. the card, which has a purple cow on the front.
melebeth and I recite the poem after people comment about how cool, a purple cow.
But it's only the two of us. Everyone else is thinking it's some crackhead thing we made up. We decide it must be a northeast thing and leave it at that, mostly.
melebeth and I have had several conversations about purple cows since then. It comes up once in a while.
So when I was driving back from my parents this weekend, along the New Jersey Turnpike, and I saw a purple cow...well...that's just overwhelming. In fact, the first thing I did after reciting the poem was to call
melebeth on the phone, where I practically shrieked "I saw a purple cow!" To which she replied "It's a sign. I don't know what it means but it's a sign!"[3] And then she asked me where I was. I explained that I was driving along the New Jersey Turnpike, and there was a pick up truck, with a Santa Clause statue in it. And it was pulling a trailer with four cow statues (two black and white, one brown and one PURPLE) two sheep statues and two deer like creature statues.
So I've seen a purple cow. What now? What does this mysterious sign mean?
Anyone?
[1]Northern Virginia
[2]People who live in Norther Virginia, although that definition is kind of loose since we do include some people who live in Maryland among the "NoVans"
[3]If my mother has her way, it means that I will meet some nice boy soon. Not that I'd hugely object to that or anything.
