Friday night I worked...sort of. I supervised an outreach at Nissan Pavillion, and got to watch the Counting Crows/John Mayer concert for free. Was supposed to go out with Kerry and Jill for a drink after, but it's Nissan, and it took me an hour and then some to get out of the parking lot. Ended up scrapping the drink idea. Came home and crashed...a good thing.

Saturday I woke up really early, got up for about half an hour and went back to sleep. Spent too long at the bank trying to close and re-open checking accounts since my checkbook was in the wallet that disappeared. Then, spent the afternoon shopping, and the evening with [livejournal.com profile] aquariumgirl and John. A trip to REI to get some packing cubes and a pillow, dinner at Hard Timesand then lots of talk about college, and choices and a game of Flower Power.

Sunday I spent with Rachel, at Made By You, painting pottery. Also did more pre-trip shopping. Seeing Rach is always nice. Lots of talk about the baby, about our families, and most of all, about us. About our friendship, and how it's lasted so long. It's not common when your best friend moves away at five that 23 years later you're still best friends. For almost ten years, we saw each other only once or twice a year, and some years not at all, but our friendship endured. When my parents decided that I was old enough to take the ferry to Bridgeport by myself, we saw each other slightly more often, although not that much. We also had two summers at camp together, but all in all, not that much time. And yet, she's still such an essential part of my life. We're so different, and yet I can't imagine not having her around. We sit around and complain about how conservative NoVa is compared to up north where we came from, about the government not funding enough of the stuff we do. I love that she flat out said at the beginning of her internships this year with HRSA that she refused to work in abstinence only stuff. She's so dramatically different from any of my other friends, but at the same time, so essential.

Pre-trip stuff is nearly done. A few more things to do-buy books, a cat carrier and cat food, random bathroom-type things that I don't have in small sizes. And packing. Which reminds me Bay Area folks...weatherwise, what's it been like? What kind of weather do I need to dress for?

Those of you who want postcards should e-mail me your address. Those of you who want to visit with me when I'm out on the road should make sure I can get in touch with you. I'm not sure how much lj/e-mail access I'll have.

And for the Boston people, the plans may change, we may depart from here instead of Boston. We'll see. If they do change, I'll let you know.

Summer thunderstorms are a normal event. As is my watering the plants on the balcony. Often, Beta will keep me company while I do that, lounging on the balcony, eating the catgrass that I've planted for him and Oblivion. I hadn't gotten a chance to fertilize the plants over the weekend, and since the vegetables get fertilized weekly, I decided to do that this evening. As I'm out there, it begins to rain. Oblivion had already wandered into the house, but Beta was still out there, sort of curious, watching the rain but comfortable under the chair. Suddenly a large flash of lightning, and a tremendous thunderclap. Poor Beta leaps out from behind the chair, races into the house, ears flat against his head, clearly scared, and cowers under the bed.

He's still there, I've tried to coax him out, but he's quite scared. I've never seen him do this before, and I'm sort of amused, but I feel bad for him. I think I'll go talk to him a bit more and see if he'llc ome back out.
