Hurry Up and Wait
Jun. 27th, 2006 11:57 amToday is all about waiting and then running around.
I'm waiting for a call or an e-mail from the mortgage people, so that I can go to the bank and get cashier's checks for the closing tomorrow. I also have to head up to Apopka City Hall and drop off a deposit for water, sewer and garbage service. After which, I'll go to Target and pick up a couple of folding chairs for the bridge table, so we have four, and cat litter, and probably stop at the supermarket as well. The walk through was rescheduled for tonight, from tomorrow.
Cayne was over there yesterday for the re-inspection, and apparently the lawn is in dire need of cutting, though the current occupants have said they would take care of that before they leave. Fortunately, today is dry and bright, so we're really hoping they follow through.
I discovered on Friday when I was at work (and oh what a dreadful experience that was) that I already know someone in our neighborhood. I had mentioned to her a few weeks ago that we were looking at houses in Apopka, and asked how she liked living there. I saw her Friday, and mentioned that we were closing on a place there...and I described briefly where it was. Her eyes lit up, and she said "Oh, that's right by me." Our street is off of a street that is shaped sort of like the letter "C"-we 'll be the first right turn off the bottom end, and her street is about 2/3 of the way around the curve from us. In fact, we looked at a house on the street she lives on.
And why was work dreadful on Friday? I was told there was a curriculum meeting, and that they would like me in the meeting, and so, I went. It turned out not to be a curriculum meeting, but a meeting about volunteer orientation and training. Which is fine, and my presence was also useful and desireable at this meeting. Unfortunately, it was poorly planned. First of all, no one seemed to know if the meeting was supposed to start at 9 or 9:30, or 10, so people kept trickling in. Then, it turns out the meeting is scheduled concurrent with the HIV testing that's always scheduled for this time, so they duck out of the meeting for a good thirty or forty minutes to do an HIV test. So, people have been trickling in and out of the meeting, no one seems to know who is running the meeting, there's also no agenda, it seems. And, the meeting went on for a very long time, because it was so poorly coordinated.
Then, following that meeting, I needed to pick up a piece of paperwork from someone's office, and reschedule a meeting with someone else. The first meeting ended, I spoke with the person who I needed to schedule something with, and said I'd be back in a moment, but needed to use the restroom first. When I returned to the room, to gather my things, the two people I had business were still there, along with the executive director, and another person, having a brief meeting. No problem, I can wait a few minutes. What it was though, was J. being thoroughly raked over the coals, and reprimanded for something she hadn't handled in the best way possible...she didn't necessarily do wrong, but she should have informed people higher in the management chain sooner. And it should never have been done in front of me. But it was. And it continues to reflect on the kind of poor management and disorganization that this agency suffers from.
In weather related news, we've got sunshine today, though it's a bit overcast. It seems that the rainy season should have started a month ago, but it hasn't yet. We haven't been getting daily storms, but we have had a few days of heavy rain, between the remanants of Alberto, and the last two days of rain here. Our "lake" has gone from being several feet below the banks to just about overflowing.
There's a Space Shuttle launch scheduled for this weekend. We haven't bought tickets to go to the Cape, but at some point, we'll try and go see a launch, I think. We're talking about going to DisneyWorld for the Fourth of July. I'm sure it will be crowded, but it's also probably a fantastic fireworks show. We'll see what we feel like doing, and how the weather is.
And now, I have to find out why the mortgage guy hasn't called yet.
