Days go By
Jul. 17th, 2010 06:41 pmNaomi is beginning to grasp the idea of patterns. One of her favorite questions right now is "What comes next?" There isn't always a "next" for what she's asking though, which doesn't frustrate her yet.
She also asks "What doing," and "What do now?" It's rainy season in Florida, and if she's awake during the afternoon storms she'll hear the first thunderclap and say to me, "Uh oh! Is raining! What do now?" Sometimes the declaration of rain is a bit premature, but it's fun that she's aware of that. I don't know that I'll ever forget how I felt when she was about 17 months old and walked out in the rain, turned her palms upwards, looked at the sky and said "Wow" and that declaration of "is raining" reminds me of that moment. The wonder with which she saw the world in that moment blew me away. She was 19 months old-just before Miriam was born.
Naomi is currently recovering from her latest bout of what I call "toddler-itis"-random moderate/high fever, no other symptoms, just not feeling well. She had a temperature of 103-ish/39.5-ish yesterday. We canceled our plans to go to the indoor play space, and now perhaps we'll go on Tuesday or next Friday.
Miriam is working towards becoming an efficient crawler. She moves a few feet, then sits on her tushie, does whatever she wants and then moves on. Different from Naomi who was go-go-go...Miriam is much more serious, takes in situations, approaches with more caution. She's beginning to move greater distances right now. I wouldn't declare crawling "mastered" but she certainly knows what to do when she wants or needs to do it.
We schlepped down to Macro Baby today to look at double strollers. They have a better selection of the moderate and higher end doubles than Babies R Us does. (It used to be USA Baby and was a much nicer store when it was. I didn't realize it was the same place until we got there.) After looking at another Graco, a Phil and Ted's, a Baby Jogger, a Kolcraft and a Chicco, we settled on the Maclaren that we'd originally thought we wanted. I'm just glad to not have to haul around the Graco Monstrosity that we've been using. It's nice when Miri was more likely to sleep in the car and I didn't want to wake her to move her out of the car seat, but now that she's awake more often, it's a nusiance.
We're thinking about minivans again. Or more precisely "cars large enough for two adults, two or three kids and their stuff." We almost went to look today but the kids were too tired and too hungry to go. I'm not looking forward to giving up my little car, but it's getting ridiculous...we need to figure out what we're going to do about the airport when we go to my Mom and Dad's-neither of us drives a car that will take suitcases+stroller+car seats/children+us to the airport. I'm just feeling unhappy about it.
