Driving in the car today with Naomi and Miriam, and listening to Free to Be You and Me, and the story of Atalanta comes on. This is one of Naomi's favorite stories, and we listen quietly for a few minutes. Then Miriam pipes up with, "Everyone gets married!" I paused, and said, "Well, that's what the king in the story said, but really not everyone gets married. We know some people who are married, and some people who aren't." Then we talked about people we know who are married, and people who we know who aren't married, making some short lists of each group. As the conversation continued, I said, "You know what makes me sad and angry? There are some people who are trying to make the law that only boys and girls can get married-that girls can't marry girls, and boys can't marry boys, even if they love each other a lot." And from the back seat, a small, indignant voice spoke up-"Mama! That's not fair. That's like segregation, when brown boys could only marry brown girls, and peach boys could only marry peach girls."
I paused for a momet and said, "You're right Naomi. But you're not-quite-six, and you get it. How come you know that and there are grown ups who don't understand that?"
She answered me. "Maybe they just don't believe what segregation means and it wasn't nice." Then she asked about a cookie.
