A few weeks ago, I was at the wrap party for Arena Football, which got a little silly and a litle rowdy. And one of the bosses was asking for people's car keys (and a few people actually handed them over.)

During a conversation, he made a joke about a "key party"-a comment which,at first went completely over Cayne's head.

So, without the use of your favorite search engine, would you answer the following poll...

I'd heard of a key party before "The Ice Storm", but I didn't know what one was until I saw the movie.

I asked my mother if she and my father had done anything like that since they were hip, happening, party-throwers during the 70s. My aunt and I had to explain to her what they were.

In retrospect, I think I actually do know what one is. It just hadn't occured to me that they were called key parties.

The Urban Dictionary Entry for this has essential references to het sex in it; is there a gay variant of this? How do you decide which member of the couple puts in their keys?

What a curious practice. I am now enlightened!

my guess (likely wrong) is that a key party is one where all car keys are collected - a la the party in Say Anything.

Wasn't the Ice Storm based on a novel or something...I cannot remember.

I'm right there with you

I'm not vanilla and I still don't know what one is.

Hey, how come you didn't include "Never been to one, but I wanna go" in the options? *grin*

I first heard of them when [livejournal.com profile] cappyhead burst out laughing in The Grinch Who Stole Xmas (the Jim Carrey version) movie and I made her explain.

Ha, gay men don't need an excuse to [do this sort of thing].

There was an episode of That 70s Show with one, too.

I think I first heard it referenced in the sitcome, That '70's Show, where Red and wife have absolutely no clue what a key party is, and almost ends up going home with the wrong woman!
