Would you consider a slightly used Subaru Legacy or Outback station wagon? They're both considered very reliable, which makes them good choices as used cars, and of course they're more likely to be in your price range if they're a couple of years old. My mother-in-law bought a used Outback a couple of years ago, and it's been an excellent car thus far.
