Dad was working in Tower 2 on 9/11. The first tower was hit, and rumors flew around Dad's office that there was "a fire" in the first tower. Dad knew that it was likely that they would evacuate his building as well. He had terrible knee problems at the time, and decided that rather than waiting, and trying to walk down all the flights of stairs, he would just go at that time, and come back when the all clear was given. He took an elevator part way down, and as he was waiting to change elevators, his building was hit. He walked the rest of the way down, and walked. He was mostly physically unhurt by the events, though he's not the same person as he was before.
My Dad grew up on the Lower East Side, and so he walked there, to Economy Candy, where he'd been going since he was a kid, and where Jerry took care of him until he could get home.
It was hours before he could get a call through to my Mom, of course, and even more before he could get home.
I was actually living and working in DC when this was going on...it was a truly scary experience for everyone in the family.
