A comment on language and the presidential debate

If you know me IRL, and not electronically, you probably know that I don't swear. It's not that I'm offended by the words or anything, but it's not something that was permitted in my house as a child and so it's not a habit I really developed. My Mom's philosophy was "Save the words like that for the moments you really need strong words and they'll mean a lot more" and my own experience is that it's true...that when I was baking cookies shortly after Cayne and I moved in together and the cat jumped onto the counter where I was dropping cookies onto trays, and I yelled out "Oh shit," Cayne came running from the other side of the house because he knew that if I was using strong language like that something was up.

So we're sitting here suffering through the debate, and I turn to the television and say, "Shut up, John McCain. I'm not your friend, asswipe."

I got shock from my husband.

I'm tempted to wish that John McCain's tongue would fall out.

McSame needs to rethink this "friends" thing. Its like Palin & the winking and shoutouts. I don't want my political leaders to be regular Joes. I want them to be educated and dignified and smarter than me.

Of course, I don't want my political leaders to be Republicans either, so clearly I'm not their target audience.

I'm surprised you'd watch what promised to be a sham of a debate—electoral-vote.com talked about the rules today and I gave up before even getting started.

I have to admit that I was secretly very happy to be at an AA meeting during the debate so I wouldn't feel guilty by not watching it.

Cayne's choice, not mine. And he can't even vote. I hate watching the debates. I know who I'm voting for, and watching just makes me grouchy.

I watch this kind of thing if I think there's a decent chance that someone notable will just completely lose it on live TV. I had high expectations for the VP debate. But yeah, if I could vote, I'd already know who to vote for. I yearn for the day when I'm gripped with indecision about who to cast a ballot for.

I was amused at Tom's attempts to rein them in. Constant chastising wasn't going to get the job done, Brokaw!

Other than that, I was just sorry that McCain didn't get all angry and asplode. His "My friends..." precursor reminded me of someone I once knew who used that nomenclature constantly. Didn't work for him in the workplace, and it doesn't work for McCain now.
