Every once in a while, I sit back and look upon the time I spent temping, and as a receptionist and administrative assistant and so on greatful for the skills I have as a result. Case in point being that I had a small mailing to put together, which I ran as a mail merge-envelopes, and letters. Not a big one, but I also didn't have to ask for someone else to do it for me, to wait for someone else to finish, etc. I also didn't have to do each letter individually, as some people would have. This was the second mailing I worked on this week...this one was a small mailing of letters for my program, the other was a larger mailing to our peer educators. I already have a database set up of labels for the peer educators, all I needed to do was run the set of labels for them. I discovered this after someone had started addressing the envelopes by hand. Fortunately I caught him before he'd done more than one or two, but still. So in fact, temping provided me with some valuable skills.

But it's a very interesting workplace when lunchtime conversation focuses on how often one co-worker talks about his butt, dungeon dances, and photos of us that had appeared in print wearing less clothing than would be appropriate. Someone even commented, "It's amazing he even wears clothes to the office," about one of the people at the table.
