Okay, so I've never owned a PDA before. But I'm about to purchase my first one as a birthday gift to myself. I've narrowed it down to two real choices within my budget...both from Sony. There's the Clie SJ-22 which has color and the Clie SJ20 which doesn't have color.

The main difference for me is price. I have a $25 gift certificate from amazon that will about cover the difference-I have to use it so it will contribute towards the price of whichever one I choose. Is color that big a deal? Should I spend the extra $50 for the color, or take that extra $ and do something else with it?

What are you going to use it for?

If it's going to be just calendering, and addresses, and taking notes you probably don't need color. The only time when I wish I had color on mine is when I'm trying to read my digitized subway maps.

If possible, go to a store that's got them both on display and see if the difference in screen quality is worth it to you. From the pictures, the black and white screen looks pretty good.

The only reason I can think of not to go with the color version (other than to save $50) would be for longer battery life. But judging from the Sony site, the difference isn't all that significant. (I kinda wonder how they're measuring that, since I would expect the backlight on the color screen to chew up substantial battery life.)

I'm a long-time fan of monochrome or grayscale Palm devices, but my next one will definitely be color. There are so many things that are just clearer in color.

Anyway, I second the advice to go check them both out in a store and see which one you like better.

I chose the Palm m500 (the B&W version of a series that's mostly color) from among its closest relatives because (by the reviews) its screen is much more readable outside in the sunlight.

Also, it doesn't hurt that it goes a week or two on a charge. :-)
