Note #1. I have a surgery date. 7/17. I think [livejournal.com profile] aquariumgirl is going to take me to/from the hospital and probably stay with me the first day, but there's a question about overnight, and the next two or so days. But more important, I have a surgery date. Need to schedule pre-op appointment and labs, but that may be done already by the surgery scheduler; I should get the letter soon.

Note #2. I have officially been injured at karate. And it wasn't even like I got kicked or punched. Tonight, early in our workout, while doing a front snap kick, something snapped. I have done something undermined to my right calf muscle. This means at minimum a week rest, some pain killers, crutches, ice, wrap and elevate. (You first aiders know RICE, right?) So I am sitting here questioning the sanity of living alone (it's hard to get around at the moment, and believe it or not, the thing that makes me most grouchy about it is not being allowed to workout until next week at the earliest. Okay, being told not to drive is a PITA too, but I'm not sure I'll skip the driving. But being told "no karate til the doctor says so" really sucks rocks. I hope I heal quickly.

My boss approved my leave request for 7/17, and I can stay the night, but I will need to be at work on the 18th. Also, it might work better if you were able to stay here the night of the 16th, since my house is a whole lot closer to the hospital than yours. Talk about it tomorrow?

although you learn pretty early on to never fully extend your elbow or knee when punch/kicking, it is much trickier with kicks, especially snaps. the momentum just wants to wrench that knee out of socket, or pulls a tendon.

for the record, i seriously injured my leg doing a jump snapkick in tae kwon do. this is one of the many reasons why i stopped doing it. there is definitely a way to control that momentum and use it for you - part of it is not practicing on air. (i say this when, without a bag all i can do is reps in the air myself.) but seriously, kicking air is VERY different from kicking a solid object. its almost impossible to tell if you're generating 'real' penetrating power, you are much more likely to hyperextend or pull something in the air, and if you never practice with a solid target if you actually have to use your legs to defend yourself you might find yourself surprised by the results. (possibly not in a positive way.)

anyway i think kicks above the waist are over-rated. though they have further reach, that reach comes at a cost of time and loss of balance, which a quick/smart opponent can use against you. if i were in a real fight all my feet are going to be going for is knees and shins.

One of my close friends in college was a black belt. Little guy, hard as a rock and hairy like Chewbacca. Unfortunately he liked to spar with his girlfriends and sometimes missed -- one ended up with a broken nose, the other with an arm injury.
