Nope. Just wrapped from knee to ankle in a big ace bandage that makes me itch cause of the elastic. (Yes, it has natural rubber latex, which means I'm not wearing it at all in the house, because it makes me itch-that whole allergy thing.)
What I actually did was tear the muscle, which for some reason is making the knee feel wobbly. It may just be a question of the muscle needing to heal before the knee feels solid again, or it may be that I strained the ligaments again (which I've done before, as well as dislocating that knee, but that was 14 or 15 years ago) and just need to let things heal a bit.
Thing is, I'm in dire need of bananas. I eat one every day (I sort of wonder if I did this because I'd stopped eating bananas for about five days) and I'm about to eat my last one. I've got to figure out how to manage to get bananas, and possibly a few other random groceries and hobble around on crutches.
Ah, I was thinking of the big-assed immobilizer I had when I screwed up my knee about 18 months ago - I fell on it ans sprained it. It was this big padded thing that went from upper thigh to ankle. What you have sounds more mobile.
I'm too far away to help with shopping :-( Does your store have those little motorized carts? That was how I did grocery shopping when I had my knee messed up, and my sprained ankle (done a month apart, same leg. I'm talented) I felt dorky as hell in it, but it made shopping possible. I noticed that our local Trader Joe's even had one last time we were there!
Take it easy, and take your pain meds if you need to *wags finger*
It's fortunately not the immobilizer. I've been in one of those before (twice!) and it's no fun. I couldn't drive at all in one of those and in this I can, although I'm not supposed to. (So I do the bare minimum of driving.)
I'm not sure which of the local grocery stores would have one of the little carts...I may have to drive a bit further than usual into one of the nicer/better neighborhoods...I'll probably call the Giant over here first to check. I wish they would fininsh the brand spanking new Safeway that's about a half a mile away already.
I'd take the pain meds if I really needed them. Sleep is awkward cause I've got to keep my leg up, which means sleeping on my back, which is not comfortable for me. But they do such a number on my guts that I avoid them if possible. They might help me sleep though.
It's not the immobilizer...fortunately. I hate those things-twice I've been in them. And were I in one, there would be no driving-now I can drive even though I'm not supposed to. I'm just doing the bare minimum. This is just an ace bandage that makes me very itchy (latex allergy...I could kill the ortho tech for it. This is why I'm not wearing the bandage at home, only when I'm out. And I need to find out who to talk to about it...it's on my list of things to do. Hives are no fun. And when I'm in pain like I was on Tuesday, I'm not always the best advocate for my own care.)
I'll have to call around to find out which grocery stores have the motorized cart; I may have to drive to a nicer/better neighborhood than I live in to get one. They need to finish the brand new Safeway which will be about half a mile away. I can't go to the closest Trader Joe's cause parking is a perpetual nightmare there. *sigh* But we do have Harris Teeter, although that means driving a bit.
I'm avoiding the pain meds because they make me very sleepy and they do a number on my guts. (This would be better treated with high doses of ibuprofen, but I'm allergic so I get Tylenol-3 instead. And oh so pleasant narcotic side effects.) They might help with sleep which is very awkward at the moment because in order to keep my leg elevated I've got to sleep on my back, which is very uncomfortable for me.
Out here, Raley's and Alberton's have the carts, but Albertson's have weird controls that hurt my hands if I use them for long, so I far prefer Raley's.
Once a month or so, I pester Whole Foods to get them, though I can't afford to shop there for more than odds and ends on sale. It surprises me that such a "progressive" store makes it so that gimpy people can't do a big shopping there.
It does surprise me about Whole Foods not having them. I do know that the two Whole Foods I go to outside the city have very narrow aisles which would be difficult to manuver anything through-stroller, wheelchair or motorized cart. They're not designed for anyone really to do massive shopping. The newer one that I used to shop at when I lived in DC proper may have had the carts, but it was certainly better designed, with wider aisles. It's on the edge of the gayborhood, where things are really starting to push out from DuPont circle proper, out towards 14th street. I always figured that the lack of accessibility at the two Whole Foods I shop at out here was a design thing more than anything. Now you've got me wondering...I'll have to check out the one closer to work, in Arlington (which is newer and bigger) and see.
Even more interesting. Now my curiosity is really piqued. When I'm more mobile (or at least more up to driving) I'll go over to the one in Arlington and check it out...
Have you spoken to regional or corporate offices about it at all?
No, I just pop notes into the suggestion box ("I come in here now and then for a scone or a tub of yogurt. I wish I could do grocery shopping here, but you haven't got electric carts, and I can't manage your store for long without them.") once every three or four weeks. They've never replied.
Contacting the regional office sounds like a good idea. I hadn't thought of it. Thanks.
I was poking the website for something like that, now that you've got me wanting to investigate this further...
Apparently one of the local Whole Foods is moving to a space much much closer to where I live (about half the distance it is now) so I suspect it's a larger space, and will be renovated. I'll be on the lookout...
