Can't Swallow
Jun. 7th, 2002 10:37 amThe continuing saga...
It started here, when I was seeing the NP for asthma-related stuff and she cultured my throat only to discover I had strep...even though I hadn't had a sore throat at all and felt fine, other than the not breathing well thing.
So I'm a good girl, I pick up the prescription for ten days of ammoxicillin, 500 mg, three times a day and all that. I take all ten days worth. And now...after ten days of antibiotics, I've got a sore throat. (It actually started a couple of days ago, but still-one would think I'd still feel fine, at least as far as my throat went...but no. Can't swallow much today. It hurts. Not fair, this sucks and all that. It's Pride weekend for goodness sakes...and I have things to do. Work related things to do. (I'll admit the concept of Work and Pride in the same thought is still a little odd...like, work is encouraging me to go out and be visibly queer.) I expect I'll make some post about Pride over the weekend somehow...
And for those of you celebrating Pride in your own city this weekend...have fun. Don't get too much sun.

Date: 2002-06-07 09:10 am (UTC)If you could swallow I'd suggest zinc tablets but maybe you could deal with zinc lozenges. They do help.
Also, licorice tea with honey is great for sore throats. Most any hot tea is good for stuff like this - "black tea" (i.e. Lipton) actually contains theophilline, which is good for asthma symptoms.
And milkshakes. They aren't medicinal, but they're easy to swallow, cold relief on the throat, and a good emotional pick-me-up. :) This is, unless the cold stuff affects your asthma too badly.
I'm so sorry this is happening just before Pride weekend...:( I hope you can manage to go (assuming it's not at the expense of your health). *offering hugs*

Date: 2002-06-07 09:33 am (UTC)The strep's not affecting my asthma...I'm not sure why, but the regimine that had controlled it well for several years just stopped working this year. I'm differently medicated, and feeling a thousand times better, just learning to cope with the side effects of one of the drugs (sometimes it makes me jittery and unable to concentrate, and it wakes me up in the middle of the night for about 10 or 15 minutes three or four hours after I take the bedtime dose.)
When I lived in NY and got tonsillitis, I'd survive on applesauce, wonton soup and vanilla shakes from carvel. The dairy messes with my asthma a bit, but not so badly that I'll give up shakes.
I'm going to call the advice nurses in a bit, when I get home, and see what they say.
And I'm not missing Pride...though I think I'm skipping the dyke march.

I hope you feel better soon.
