A religion question...
Sep. 15th, 2004 11:39 amSo I read this post in
weddingplans about honoring the Virgin Mary during your wedding ceremony by placing flowers at her feet and such...and while it seems like a nice tradition and all that, and while I sort of do understand the place of Mary in Catholicism, I do have questions.
To me, it seems a lot like idol worship...it may not be the Golden Calf, but it just seems out of place. (I'm not saying that it is, and I'm perfectly content to chalk that feeling up to my own religious background.) So here's my question...Catholics/former Catholics/people with a better understanding of Catholicism than I've got...
(I feel strongly enough about it that it makes me feel squirmy, and nauseous and icky. The same way I feel when I go into a Church and see the statue of Jesus on the Cross and all that. And I'm not judging this practice, or the symbolism, please understand that. I just know it's totally wrong for me.)
How do you get around that? What's the justification for doing things like that, and not having them fall under the idea of idol worship, or violating the Commandment about "having no other G-ds before me?"
