Banned Books Week
Sep. 29th, 2004 09:31 amβItβs not just the books under fire now that worry me. It is the books that will never be
written. The books that will never be read. And all due to the fear of censorship.
As always, young readers will be the real losers.β β Judy Blume
It's Banned Books week. As a book lover, wannabe librarian, and voracious reader, I think about how lucky I am that my parents encouraged reading and tried very hard to provide age-appropriate reading materials that were on par with my reading skill level. (In fact, they only once took a book away from me because they felt it wasn' age appropriate...it was Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger, and I was ten. Admittedly, they didn't do a very good job at confisgating it, and I picked it back up and finished it a few days later, when they had forgotten about it. Catcher in the Rye is number thirteen on the list of most challenged books, 1990-2000.)
What's your favorite story about a book, or about reading? What's your favorite banned or challenged book?
