It's been a good cooking week...

Yesterday I made a fantastic pot of meaty mushroom chili (which, if you didn't want meat in it would probably be terrific with veggie crumbles.) Today, there's a pot of chicken soup on my stove. It'll never live up to my Mom's (and she claims that her's just isn't as good as her mother's) but I'm hoping it'll be good. That and some challah will make a nice dinner, even though Cayne's not going to be here. There's plenty of soup for us. It's a little flat right now, but it's simmering and I'll season and re-season as it cooks.

There's a tropical storm hanging around at the moment, and that's probably the cause of my headache, which started yesterday or the day before and seems to not want to abate. I think three to five inches of rain are expected in the next few days.

Bought tickets to Canada today, so we'll be up in Sudbury for Christmas. It'll be cold. I enjoy my in-laws but I'm dreading the weather. We'll be with my parents for Thanksgiving, possibly a visit to New Jersey on Saturday.

I had a moment on Saturday where I was kind of thinking "You know, maybe Florida isn't too bad" when we were going out, and I was looking at some palm trees. Hot on the heels of this was crippling homesickness, which I'm still feeling today.

My mother's birthday is next weekend, and I'm feeling kind of badly that I won't be there, but we (my sister and I) have no idea what to get for her. We've been pooling our gift purchasing resources for a while now, and buying nicer gifts. I also need to buy a birthday card for my nephew.

I don't feel like going out in the rain...that stuff can wait til tomorrow.

Indiana's attempts to regulate assisted reproduction in ways that would effectively eliminate single people and same sex couples from becoming parents. It would require things like includes the fertility history of the parents, education and employment information, personality descriptions, verification of marital status, child-care plans and criminal background checks. Getting an approval certifiate would also require a description of the "family lifestyle of the intended parents," and don't forget the part about participation in faith-based activities.

(ETA: The orignial sponsor has withdrawn it...but that still doesn't explain how it got out of committee in the first place.)

I think one of the best smells in the world has got to be the smell of baking bread.

My house smells like challah right now.
