If you're wondering where I've been today...

Back in the spring, my younger sister was ill, and in the hospital with some mysterious gastrointestinal illness, which was thought, at various times to be appendicitus, ulcerative colitis, and a few other things. No cause for it was ever found, but in doing the tests for it, she had an abdominal CAT scan, which happened to pick up part of her lungs.

The results of the CAT scan, while inconclusive for her abdominal illness suggested follow up with a lung CAT scan. The lung CAT scan happened to catch part of her thyroid, which showed something abnormal there, and suggested further follow up. After further test, it was determined that my sister has a tumor on half her thyroid. The tumor has been biopsied, and based on those results, they're removing the tumor, and half her thyroid on Tuesday. The upshot of that is that there's a 50-50 chance at cancer, which also means that there's a 50-50 chance at not cancer. She's in good spirits about it, though a little grouchy that the fantastic thing she planned for her boyfriend's birthday has to be postponed/cancelled. Her boyfriend, who was going to come in from Chicago spend a weekend with her celebrating his birthday, then go to Syracuse to see his family and then spend another weekend with my sister to celebrate her birthday has cancelled his plans to be in Syracuse. My mother has told me not to come home yet, which is fine in a way...if it's better for her and Dad and my sister for me to be here, then I as comforting as it would be to me, really what's of primary importance is what my sister wants, and second to that is what my mother wants...my job here is to support my sister and my Mom. If they want me to stay in Florida, I will.

The pulmonologist told her that the lung nodules looked normal, and she was fine, unless the thyroid tumor was actually cancerous, in which case they would need to be biopsied.

The good news is that thyroid cancer tends to be very much localized, so if it is thyroid cancer, the chance of it having spread is fairly slim. We'll know more after Tuesday.

That's the story here. I apologize to the people reading this who are embroiled in this weeks inter-community drama (I think there are four of you) for not being able to focus my attention on that today.

(Comments off, but e-mails welcomed. geminigirl at livejournal is fine, and will get to the e-mail address I generally read.)
