We're heading out to the airport shortly for what seems like a very long trip. It's a couple of hours flight to Toronto, and then another hour or so from Toronto to Sudbury, with a layover in between, at the airport in Toronto-enough time to go through customs, check in for the second flight and probably grab some dinner.
We'll spend ten days at my in-laws, mostly relaxing I hope. Cayne's older sister isn't going to make it for the holiday, which is sad and disapppointing...but not entirely unexpected that she'd call at the last minute and say she couldn't make it. His younger sister and her family will be there, which is wonderful, since she and I get along very well.
Speaking of sisters, my half sister (we share a Dad, but have different mothers) who is sort of...difficult, has surprised me yet again. (The short short version of my sister's story is that she doesn't speak to my parents, my younger sister or brother, or her mother for some reason no one can determine, but she will show up without her husband and children for family events, and does send holiday cards and birthday cards and so on.) A package from her arrived the other day...containing a note and an album full of pictures from my bridal shower and wedding. It was very thoughtful of her to send it, but I still don't understand her.
My mother-in-law is really trying very hard, and I do appreciate it...she's apparently scoured Sudbury to make sure to provide Kosher stuff for me whenever she can. Including, apparently, turkey bacon. It's thoughtful of her, but really not necessary. I pointed out to Cayne though, that she'll probably do thinks like buy turkey bacon, and then make her perogies, which she fills with potato, and cheese...and bacon. That thought made us bouth laugh, though Cayne agrees that she'd probably do something like that. Cayne says he thinks she does it to help encourage me to stick around, just in case he really screws things up. It really is the thought that counts.
Admittedly, I'm looking forward to the post holiday sales, I think...it'll make it easier to buy a shower and a wedding gift for my cousin. The shower is on the Saturday after we come back, and I'll buy a gift when we return. I have no idea what to get, and I'm not really looking forward to the shower, but that's life.
The cats will be well cared for by our friends Nick and Su while we're gone...mostly by Su I think, who squeed with joy when she met them the other night.
When I come back, I'll start working on a menu for a "spa party" that a friend is planning for January 14th. We may go look at a house nearby...while it's a bit earlier than we had planned, it can't hurt to look.
Access to the computer is sporadic when we're at the in-laws, so I'm not sure I'll see what you post or e-mail (though I'll do my best to catch up.) Text messages do reach me, and if you can't text from a cell phone, the LJ text interface isn't bad.
Safe travels to those of you heading elsewhere. Enjoy your holiday, may it not cause you too much stress. And best wishes to everyone for a wonderful 2006.
