My grown up girl
Jun. 29th, 2010 06:23 pmYesterday Naomi went to a day care like setting for the first time. I'm fortunate to be able to stay home with her, but it would be overwhelming to take her to PT with me and have to keep her off the equipment while still paying attention to Miriam-it just wouldn't work. And Cayne has to go to work-he stayed with her the first day, but he really can't every week.
So what to do with Naomi? The JCC offers a Kids Day Out program for children from six to thirty six months. $25 for three hours from 9-12. Art, music, playground, buggy rides, typical kids stuff. Close to Cayne's work, a place she's familiar with because we go for yoga, and if/when she goes to preschool, the place that's at the top of our list. So we decided to try it. He could drop her off before work and if she was miserable and unhappy, he'd pick her up and keep her at work until I could get there to take her home and in the future, I'd get a sitter to stay at home with her or find a way to take her with me.
She loved it. She was engaged and excited by the new toys and so she didn't even seem to notice that he left. No tears, she ate her snack and played and had a good time. But the best part? She came running over to me when I went to pick her up. A good balance of independence and family ties.
She's doing so much...holding my hand while I write letters and words for her on her MagnaDoodle, building tall, tall towers with her blocks (she gets frustrated when she can't reach the top) and talking. Words I didn't know she knew like spider and horse, words that are hard to say like zipper, and sentences. I love the sentences, the conversations. She's starting to grasp the one to one relationship between the number one and having one of something. She's memorizing her books. She used her fork brilliantly at lunch yesterday (Cayne met us and we went out for lunch after day care. The family time was good.) She climbs well. She's begun to interact in new ways with Miriam...trying to help her with her bottle, trying to make her laugh, giving hugs.
One of my favorite things to hear her say right now is "awesome"-"awshom." I also love watching her pat Miri on the head and tell her "don't worry."
And in a most exciting fashion, she told us "Potty" before she had to go, so Cayne (who was already in the bathroom) stripped off her diaper, sat her on her potty and she peed. Very exciting.
My girl is growing up. And she amazes me in the process.
