Cooter was the mechanic. It sticks out in my memory because I grew up around people actually named Cooter and Bubba.

The actor who played Cooter was (and maybe still is) a member of Congress.

I have to admit to not having watched the Dukes as a kid-my brother was really into them, so they were on sometimes but it just wasn't my thing.
