You know what one of the best gifts I could get for the holidays would be?
Spam filtering.
One of the best gifts anyone could give me this year would be to get spam filtering set up at the shell account I usually use. I think the tools are there, I just don't know how to use them, nor do I have the confidence to do them without someone here over my shoulder.

Date: 2003-12-22 10:09 pm (UTC)Of course, I use Mac OS X myself, but read email on my shell account, so Mail's ability to filter spam is moot for me.
I'd offer to help set it up, but I'm no expert on procmail, and I'm sure there's someone much more local than me who has experience with the whole she-bang.

Date: 2003-12-23 01:29 am (UTC)I read this as "Spam Fisting".
It was horrible. I'll go have nightmares now.

I am however, unphased by your integration of fisting into my spam thread.

Date: 2003-12-24 04:55 am (UTC)The big thing is to save (a copy of) all your spam messages and at least some of your non-spam messages for 2-4 weeks. This is easy, you could do it now.
Then when you have time, you feed all of them into spamassassin, which digests them for a while (you might want to ask your shell provider if there's a preferred time/way to do this, 'cause it's really resource-intensive). Then you create a 4-line .procmailrc, and-- bingo! All your spam messages are tagged so that your email program (pine?) can filter them into a "clean me out once a week" folder.
