You know what one of the best gifts I could get for the holidays would be?

Spam filtering.

One of the best gifts anyone could give me this year would be to get spam filtering set up at the shell account I usually use. I think the tools are there, I just don't know how to use them, nor do I have the confidence to do them without someone here over my shoulder.

I know this might be annoying but, if you were running OS X... the built in spam filtering in Mail.app is awesome! I never see spam anymore.

Not trying to convince, I just can't resist... I admit, I'm a Mac pimp, sorry.

Conversely, it's really just a Boyseian filter program, and with procmail and a utility like spamassassin on a shell account you can accomplish the same thing.

Of course, I use Mac OS X myself, but read email on my shell account, so Mail's ability to filter spam is moot for me.

I'd offer to help set it up, but I'm no expert on procmail, and I'm sure there's someone much more local than me who has experience with the whole she-bang.

All true, but pretty darn complex for the average user by comparison.

Oh, no quibble there. But it's highly unlikely she'll want to move over to OS X...

Monkey reads too fast.

I read this as "Spam Fisting".

It was horrible. I'll go have nightmares now.

I run procmail on my linux shell, so I can help you out if you need it.

I just set up spamassassin. It was daunting at first, but quickly made sense.

The big thing is to save (a copy of) all your spam messages and at least some of your non-spam messages for 2-4 weeks. This is easy, you could do it now.

Then when you have time, you feed all of them into spamassassin, which digests them for a while (you might want to ask your shell provider if there's a preferred time/way to do this, 'cause it's really resource-intensive). Then you create a 4-line .procmailrc, and-- bingo! All your spam messages are tagged so that your email program (pine?) can filter them into a "clean me out once a week" folder.

it was daunting only because its manpage goes into excruciating detail about how to tweak it. After realizing that none of that was necessary, it was quite easy.

What I'm saying is, I could easily describe to you the commands to run and the file to create, and then you'd be set. It took me a few attempts to deduce them, but what I've got should work for most anyone.
