So I'm doing some paperwork today, which involves going through our surveys. Our surveys ask a question about sexual orientation. The question has check boxes. We ask the people filling out the survey to check only one. One of the choices happens to be "other, please explain."

Someone checked the box for "heterosexual/straight/likes opposite sex"

and then, in the line for "other" wrote in

"normal"

Ick. For a second I skimmed the entry and thought said person checked the "homosexual" box, and wrote in "normal". Now, that would have rocked. Ah well, ah me.

Do you think they were trying to be obnoxious, or were they possibly just confused?

heterosexuality is, after all, "normal", in the sense that the majority of people in our society identify as heterosexual...

That anormative freaking weirdo was the only one to do that, right?

Actually this is quite cool. The respondent clearly felt that just being straight wasn't normal enough, so s/he had to create a new category. Beyoooond sexuality! It's nice when we force them into thinking, umm, outside the box.
