Her very well loved husband died of colon cancer, and since then, she's become a fierce fan of screening, and I think she thinks that if she's public about her own screening, it will give other people courage to go for it.
Her husband's death was widely publicized, and she had two young children at the time as well.
I have doubts that celebrity screenings on TV have much benefit. I'd much rather see/hear about her work for things like more accessible screenings in lower income/underserved/un or underinsured communities.
I am unfamiliar with the "celebrity" you mention, but I think it's a good idea to show a mammogram on TV, so people can see what it involves and will hopefully be less afraid when they get called to go for one themselves.
A lot of the fear of medical procedures is fear of the unknown...
