I have no idea if she went to tea dances. It just seemed to fit the whole tea dance/boatel/Fire Island theme.
I grew up further east than you and people still talked about it. I admit, I'm not surprised that you know what a boatel is. When I first checked the resutlts, two people had said yes...I mentioned this to Cayne with the point that one was in the Coast Guard and the other had grown up on Long Island.
