So, does anyone else reading this think about how they get things like horses or kayaks to the Olympics?

Or is this like the time my mother was wondering how many rolls of toilet paper were used a day at Disney World?

Ergh, I didn't even think about it, to be honest. Can you fly a horse? Otherwise, I imagine it travels by boat, but how the hell can you assure a horse's emotional stability after that sort of thing? Can't explain that sort of thing to an animal...

everything is flown in. to a horse an airplane is a noisy trailer.

think about the pole vaulters poles, or the rowing 8's if you want to think of ungainly goods to transport.

Well, a noisy trailer with massive pressure changes. I'd bet the pressure inside the cabin, though much greater than that outside, is lower than in the center of the biggest hurricane.

For the toilet paper question, she should just write them:

Many years ago, I worked for an air freight forwarding company.

Everything flies. All it takes is money. With enough money, you can even ship an airplane inside another airplane.

I haven't listened to the program but here's a page with a pointer about shipping the horses to the Beijing games.

What concerns me more is why horses are allowed in the Olympics at all. Sitting on a horse is in no way athletic, so "equestrianism" isn't a sport. A game, possibly. But really more of a pastime.

SITTING on a horse is in no way athletic: agreed. Getting a 1500 pound horse to leap effortlessly over a 6 foot fence faster than anyone else can without knocking down any rails does take some skill and athleticism. Getting that same 1500 pound horse to perform a series of maneuvers that appear to be dancing without any visible effort on your part but a tremendous amount of leg strength also requires a certain level of athleticism.

Someone who taught me at vet school is in charge of making sure all the horses don't give each other hideous diseases.
