I just tried to explain to Cayne the difference between Katy Perry singing about kissing girls and Jill Sobule singing about kissing girls. I think I did a reasonable job at it.
Oh, yeah. I remember the summer of 1995, when that Jill Sobule album was on constant repeat in our houseful of lesbians and bi women.
I particularly remember being with a big group - a dozen people, probably - in a restaurant, and someone starting to sing that, and all of us taking it right through to the end. And the gay waiters just beaming at us.
I don't particularly like the Katy Perry song, but I kind of like the spoof video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AL5low-TqV8) of it by Good Asian Drivers. (They're a transguy and a lesbian who do queer slam poetry and music together.)
Was your explanation that the old song is about women who actually like kissing women and the new song is about the girls who kiss other girls to turn men on? Because that's what they feel like to me.
The Jill Sobule one is also a better music video, there's a plot, some interesting visual work and a lot of artistic merit other than just showing off the star.
Yeah, I do agree, there seemed to be a lot of joy in the Jill Sobule video.
I think the video "is also almost purely meant to titillate men." But I think Perry's song and vocal performance suggest you should check back a few days later to see whether the singer-character's purpose is to turn men on, because she's not really sure herself, yet.
