We need new cell phones.

More precisely, I'm fed up with [livejournal.com profile] zedrikcayne's forgetfulness, and we're trying to modify some things to make it easier for him rely less on me to keep track of some things for him, and rely more on himself...and I've actually got a technology related project that I'll throw out for feedback/suggestions, too.) So, even though we've both got functional cell phones that we like (we have the first edition of the LG EnV) we're going to replace our phones with smarter-phones when they're eligible for upgrades. (The calendar function on our current phones is kind of irritating to use.)

Here's what we need:

A great calendar function
A camera (we love our phone cams)
Either a navigator function (currently we get VZ Navigator through our phones) or the ability to get Google Maps or to function as a GPS

Must be rather sturdy-I know these kinds of devices are sometimes not as good at taking a beating as regular cell phones, but we need as sturdy as possible.

Other important details...

We're on Verizon. We're not planning to change providers, so suggestions that include this are not helpful. Verizon had a plan that best suited our needs (primarily with Canada) and so we've chosen them as our provider.

So, smart people...

Palm Centro or Blackberry? (I'm looking probably at the Blackberry Curve-I prefer it's shape and keyboard to the Pearl, unless you happen to know that there's a new Blackberry coming to Verizon that I don't know about .)

The Blackberry Curve is fantastic. The full QWERTY keyboard makes it leaps and bounds above the Pearl. At my last job, the IT guy told me if you plan on doing a decent amount of email or texting from the phone, the Pearl keyboard would drive you insane.

I prefer the Blackberry software over the software on the Palm. I find it easier to use, frankly, and I also love the "pearl" on the Blackberry Curve. It made a huge difference when they upgraded my old Blackberry to that one. It's thin, it's relatively small, and I am going through Crackberry withdrawal something fierce.

Hubbyfink got a Blackberry Curve last weekend and is completely head over heels in love with it and all its functionality.

Definitely go with the Curve over the Pearl. I have an 8830 World Edition and I much prefer the keyboard on the boyfriend's Curve, even though this too has a full keyboard. The keys are too close together and it drives me nuts half the time.

I have a Pearl, only because the Curve was backordered indefinitely when I needed a new phone. Wish I had the Curve instead.

(well actually, I wish the Android G1 was available on Sprint, is what I wish.)

I'd say "forget the Centro." On Verizon, the real competition is between BlackBerry and Samsung's Windows Mobile 6 smartphones.

Based on personal preference, I'd go with the Centro, or if you can, wait for the Palm Pre. There's an awful lot of additional Palm applications out there that might interest you as well.

I have a Centro and I really like it. But it does have a teeny tiny keyboard.

Any Palm with PalmOS plus the software package DateBk 6 (which extends the Palm TODO list to be much geekified) here. It has all the combinations of reminders and such that a geek would want.
