Conversations with my Mother....

Mom: "Are there men in Baltimore?"
Me: "Of course. Baltimore has a huge Jewish population too."
Mom:"Oh, that's even better."
Me: Yeah, something like a third of Jews in Baltimore self identify as Orthodox."
Mom: "Well don't go coming home with any of those Orthodox types, okay?"
Me:"I couldn't keep doing what I'm doing if I did, Mom."


(There's a reason I'm discussing Baltimore with my mother. I'm not discussing it on here yet. But in discussing the actual reason I'm discussing Baltimore, my mother has to turn the conversation to this.)

My mom doesn't care about the marriage part; she just wants to skip right ahead to the baby. Which there are absolutely no plans in the works to have, plus the small fact that my partner has had a vasectomy. But she really lays it on thick sometimes. Last time I saw her, she suggested that I would be all alone at the end of my life if I didn't have one. Today, looking over the photos of the new kitten that I emailed her, she lamented that there's no chance of her having a grandkid now that I have a second cat. I don't dare mention the news I just got that my friend Kathy from college is pregnant...

I'm totally okay with the baby part. Soon-ish, even, assuming the right partner to do that with comes along. Therin lies the rub; I'm so okay with it that I want it, and Mom insists on pressuring me about actually doing it.

I was amused though, a while back, when it had come up yet again and she said something about "an order of preference when doing things." As if I should skip the marriage part and go on to the baby part.

The thing is, while I'd like to find a male partner because I like that kind of energy for day to day stuff, space sharing, etc. I don't like assuming that that's the way it will be...and she makes it out that way.
