I forgot about the earthquake

Natural hazards exist everywhere...admittedly, some more noticable than others. I grew up in a place where hurricanes and nor'easters were what we were used to and expected. Other places have tornadoes, and still others have earthquakes. I realize this, and realize that if you live somewhere you learn to deal with whatever the natural hazard is, be it blizzard or hurricane.

Over lunch last Tuesday, mactavish and I had fascinating conversation about a few things...pets and how we live with/adapt to them, earthquakes, and bisexual (more about that part in another post.) And we determined that earthquakes are scary, but part of life in NoCal, much like hurricanes are in south Florida, for example.

Fast forward to Thursday...I'm walking around San Francisco, on my way to Good Vibrations (you really didn't think I was going to be in SF and not go there, did you?) I'm standing on a street corner, waiting to cross the street, and things are suddenly rumbling. And my head goes "hrm, odd. I didn't see a truck or bus or streetcar or anything that might cause that kind of rumble. I shrug it off as my not seeing whatever it was and get on with what I'm doing. I don't find out until later, until I get back to the place where I'm staying that it was indeed, a 3.9 mag EARTHQUAKE! The conversation sounded something like
A: "I wonder where family is, they're usually here by now...this is late."
B: "But I was reading about hail and serious storms where they were coming from."
A: "Oh really? I was reading about the earthquake today."
Me: "There was an earthquake today? That must have been that thing that felt like a truck going by when I didn't see a truck."

They laughed at me for not realizing it was an earthquake...

aliciar and I were out there that day, either eating dinner at The Stinking Rose in SF, or driving around just afterward, and never felt a thing.

I think if I hadn't been standing on the streetcorner when it happened I might have missed it.

But it was kind of cool nonetheless.

In 1997, when I was working for the Gov't doing computer installs, I went to Anchorage. I was in the elevator when the earthquake hit. I had no idea what the rumbling was until I got to the top and they asked me how the elevator ride was. They were VERY amused!
