One thing I'm consistently surprised at is how much German I've retained...and how much I've forgotten.

A few weeks back aquariumgirl had a copy of Der Spiegel, and I was reading a rather interesting article about the Queen's Jubilee. Tonight, I found myself rather challenged by some of the things that I stumbled accross while playing Cities and Knights...

I always find it more difficult to understand game rules than news articles, because with game rules, a precise understanding of each individual word in its context is critical. With news articles, it's sufficient to get the overall meaning of a sentence or paragraph.

WRT the game rules it's a more specific vocabulary that I had less of a daily-use for, so it was forgotten far more quickly than the vocabulary I used to read a news article.

We had said we were going to make an effort to speak more German...and I've been lazy about it. Of course I should probably invest some time into improving my vocabulary again in preparation for that.

Retaining the German I have learned has been really hard, since I dont use it very much. I do try to read as much German as I can, and of course listen to all that German Gothic/Industrial 00ntz I love so much. I joined a German LJ community too, although I dont post, just having that to read on my friend's page every day is making a huge difference already.

I haven't used my German on a daily basis in about ten years. I had a boyfriend in college who I spoke German with, for no clear reason...just because we both spoke German...though we also both spoke English, and our e-mails were in English. (He also spoke Dutch...and wanted me to learn it simply because by knowing both German and English it would supposedly be easy.)

I listen to the German newscasts here, when I'm home. aquariumgirl and I speak German on occasion...she more often initiates the conversation than I do, or will make a comment in German which I may or may not respond to that way. (She did that at the party we were at on the Fourth) I'd really like to get my spoken German back to a better level than it's at.

Course, I still wonder why I didn't study Spanish...

Grimkitten really has a point with the music. I was sure I'd forgotten everything I learned in high school and college but ever since I started listening to bands like Wumpscut and Funker Vogt (fantastic gothic/industrial stuff if you like the noise) it's all been coming back to me.
