Aug. 3rd, 2003 08:43 pmI think one of the signs that you're grown up (or close anyway, cause I still don't think I am) is when your own childhood toys return. I've seen a lot of Strawberry Shortcake stuff around again, and Care Bears. I fully expect that Cabbage Patch Kids or My Little Pony will return full force too.
But that's not really what this is about...
My Mom is a pretty incredible cook. I'm not talking gourmet stuff here, but good, every day kinds of food. And periodically, out would come the big gigantic pot. The pot was used for making only two things...chicken soup, and sauce. Chicken soup at the holidays, and sauce whenever the supply in the freezer was nearly depleted.
Ever since I moved away, I've been getting a couple of quarts of sauce from Mom's house when I visited. Tonight, I'm making my first attempt at Mom's sauce.
It won't be Mom's sauce. It will be mine. And it will be flavored to my taste...probably a bit more onion, a bit more spice. But it's still "Mom's Sauce" same way I make "Grandma's Chicken." It's like the chicken soup...my soup is not my Mom's soup is not her Mom's soup.
But it's not the same. Mine may be good, but it's just not as comforting.
