there are some phrases we hear commonly used-cliches if you will. I find it fascinating how often they're just not quite right when people try to translate them from spoken word to written sometimes.
Today's moment was the phrase "beyond the pail."

Date: 2003-12-08 10:28 pm (UTC)It's really "beyond the pale," and the pale is an old word for the area around and including ones cluster of huts. So "beyond the pale" would mean "outside of the immediate neighborhood clump," where more dangerous or suspicious or at least unknown things lie.
