I can't find any of the people who I need to write my third recommendation. I'm stressing like mad over this, because the deadline is 1/2, there's no way I'm going to get it done, I haven't finished my essay, I haven't taken the GRE, I'm going nuts here.

Maybe this is a bad idea after all. Maybe it was stupid to try and think I could pull the application together in three weeks.

The word of the day is fucktastic.

They're not going to not consider you if one of your recommendations is late. Admissions committees understand that faculty are flaky. Trust me on this. I'm on one. Three weeks is more than enough time you need to put together an application - the only thing that isn't rote data entry is your essay. Sit down. Breathe in realism, exhale drama. The only thing you need to be stressing over here is taking the GREs. And , most importantly, the only reason you're applying here is because of the spiffy fellowship. It's not one of your top choices otherwise, so it's just NOT A BIG DEAL if you don't get in.

I've been good about studying for the GREs....putting in a couple of hours a day. Need to pick up a geometry review book on the way home today.

If I could find the person to write the third reference, it would be good. It's the not actually being able to track them down that's stressing me out...

Worse comes to worst if you can't find anyone by the deadline, I'll write up a brilliant accolade for your teaching my course.

It's sort of a last resort offer, not because I'm not wiling, but because I'm not the best person to do it. But I can write a letter FAST, so it gives you more time to find someone else without stressing out.

Oh I know. There are people who know me in far more appropriate contexts for writing recommendations than you do.

This is just fear speaking. You can't live your life in fear. Three weeks is enough. You will be fine. Just make a list of all of the things that need to be done and keep plugging through it.

I'm not sure either, but the application that's making me crazy right now is for Yale.
