I've had that arguement too. I'm not trying to answer the "What is sex, really" question though. I've given that up.
I was working on a massive statistics project that we've got going on though, and realized that some of the ways we asked questions seemed to conflict with the way other questions were asked. So I began to wonder.
to me, anything that involves genital stimulation for the purposes of arousal/pleasure is sex. medically i ask for clarification because 9 times out of 10 when a medical professional is asking they're thinking in terms of potential conception/fluid exchange, so manual stimulation or toys wouldn't count. i also include masturbation as sex, per the first definition.
There was no choice for "I don't tell the truth" or "I have no idea how to answer that question" or "I feel uncomfortable sharing that with my medical professional."
Then I realized my answers would all be hypothetical really. Noone's ever asked me. Health professionals have only asked the vague "Are you sexually active?" question. I think that one or two of my partners may have years ago, but even then I don't think they asked for a count.
In general, if any part of me has been half a foot inside someone, I consider myself to have had sex with them. :) (not that that's the only way I consider something to be sex)
