Do any of my New Jersey knowlegeable friends have a good route from Long Island to George Street in New Brunswick? I've got to be there Monday, the woman who I'm meeting with has yet to answer my query for directions, and the map sites are all sending me in ways that I'm not sure make any actual sense (since they seem to ignore my preferred route into NJ and require going accross Westchester or through lower Manhattan.

My preferred route from Long Island to NJ involves crossing the Verezzano Bridge, following 278 through Staten Island to 440 and taking the Outerbride Crossing...that puts me near 287, near 514, the Parkway and the Turnpike.

I'd rather avoid crossing Manhattan if I can help it, and/or treking up to Westchester...I'm sure there's a sensible way, but none of the usual sources seem to know it.

Thanks.

HATE 278. Hate it hate it hate it. It's only perpose is to add an extra hour to every trip I've made to and from back home.

I think your destination lies north of your prefered route, so depending on where (and what time of day) on the island you are comming from, the other routes really might be preferable. I've done the Triborough to GWB route and it's really not that bad at all.

Ok, wait... you need to get to the Northern State/LIE from NJ and back?

The GWB-triborogh or throgsneck (sp?) route is SO much faster for that. Really. Unelss there is reported back up, on 880am or 1010am, and even then it's usually better that the SIE.

It depends on the time of day really. I've found though, that if I want to be on the North shore, the miles are made up by speed. It almost makes me with my parents lived on the north shore instead of the south.

Then again... I haven't lived there in nearly 5 years. I'm sure it's gotten worse.

If you end up working on George St. and I end up working on George St (auditioned for a theater company year long gig there two weeks ago) life will be too funny for words.

Not a clue. The audition was in NY.

According to my New Jersey native, Rutgers graduate boyfriend, take exit 9 off the Turnpike (traffic shouldn't be bad midday), go to Route 18W, off 18W, take the exit for New St. and then make a left onto George Street.

South on the Turnpike. There's no direct route from 287 to 18, according to him

You need one of the Turnpike, Rt. 1, or Rt. 514 to cover that span. Which is best depends on the time of day and day of week. When you're going there's the Turnpike's likely to be slightly faster even if you don't have Easypass.

My experience with the GWB route mentioned above is that it tends ot be about the same, on avereage, but even more vairable than the southerly route.

One reasnable alterantive is the Goethels to Turnpike exit 13. There's usually a backup getting on to the bridge eastbound but not westbound. I'd bet it's your fastest route, but not by much.

From there, I would take 514 to 27. From there, it depends where exactly on George St. you're going; if it's on the most-of-N-B side of 27, instead of the Rutgers side of 27, you'll have to turn on Neilson (first left after the bridge) and then right up Church St. to get to George, since you can't turn left from 27 to George.

I assume you mean Neilson-Church-George? :)

And yes, the Playhouse is leftwards from 27 South. So left on Neilson is the way to go.

Although, if I remember aright, the good parking lot for the Playhouse area is on either Bayard or Liberty, a couple blocks -past- Church. (Between Neilson and George.) So you can take Neilson right down to the parking lot, and avoid George St. traffic.

Eek! I'm a Jersey-dweller expounding on driving routes! Somebody tranquilize me please...

Oh wait, you weren't the one talking about the Playhouse. Oops.

Um, where on George? We can probably direct you to parking...

Okay, 313 and 317 are both very close to the Playhouse. Between Liberty and New Streets. So my previous comment applies just fine. Take Neilson to the parking lot, then walk the half-block up to George. You'll pay a couple dollars, but it's worth it.

(that section of George St. is pretty packed, and hard to find on-street parking.)

The George Street Playhouse (which is not actually on George Street) is part of New Brunswick's thriving theatre district. No, really!

The routes that took you to 27 sound good to me - 514 to 27 Albany Street.

If Hyacinth is where I remember it it's on the Rutgers side which is a right off of Albany/27 - but I could be wrong.

I *work* in New Brunswick. Want to do dinner when you're done? :)

I'm being confusing. Route 27 in New Brunswick is named Albany Street, at least where you'll be.

Want to do lunch? Dinner? Oh, I said that. ;)

FWIW, from my SIL, NJ native and longtime Rutgers NB employee:

yup, she's right: 440 intersects with US Route One South
nears Fords/Edison, NJ, just south of Woodbridge and Perth Amboy, NJ.

Here, Route One is quite near the Turnpike, and she's have to exit the
TP onto Route One, or take NJTP Exit 9 to Route 18/Memorail parkway (see
below). I personally think it's more direct to take Route One, but it's
less well marked (partly residential).

Follow Route One South. . . take Route 18/Memorial Parkway into New
Brunswick (away from the Turnpike) and follow to the marked George St.
exit. This will dump her in the midst of downtown, NJ, by Johnson and
Johnson and Johnson, toward the train station, on Albany St. Here's the
trick: she can't turn left onto George from Albany. So if she's going
to a restaurant or something on George, that's toward the left from
Albany St. if she's going toward the Rutgers Queens (College Ave.)
campus, then she'd want to turn right. If you know exactly where she's
going, I'll be happy to provide exact directions and parking info.

Looks like you've got good help, and I know nothing of NJ, but if you get up to Westchester, do let me know. =)
