May. 6th, 2004 03:11 pmDo any of my New Jersey knowlegeable friends have a good route from Long Island to George Street in New Brunswick? I've got to be there Monday, the woman who I'm meeting with has yet to answer my query for directions, and the map sites are all sending me in ways that I'm not sure make any actual sense (since they seem to ignore my preferred route into NJ and require going accross Westchester or through lower Manhattan.
My preferred route from Long Island to NJ involves crossing the Verezzano Bridge, following 278 through Staten Island to 440 and taking the Outerbride Crossing...that puts me near 287, near 514, the Parkway and the Turnpike.
I'd rather avoid crossing Manhattan if I can help it, and/or treking up to Westchester...I'm sure there's a sensible way, but none of the usual sources seem to know it.
Thanks.

I think your destination lies north of your prefered route, so depending on where (and what time of day) on the island you are comming from, the other routes really might be preferable. I've done the Triborough to GWB route and it's really not that bad at all.

Date: 2004-05-06 07:07 pm (UTC)My parents are out in Setauket; it sucks because you spend at best a good 20-30 minutes just getting to expressway/parkway.
I have a vague idea of where my destination is-the Outerbridge should put me fairly close to it, but I don't know the local roads to get to where I want to be.

Date: 2004-05-06 07:13 pm (UTC)The GWB-triborogh or throgsneck (sp?) route is SO much faster for that. Really. Unelss there is reported back up, on 880am or 1010am, and even then it's usually better that the SIE.

Date: 2004-05-07 06:39 pm (UTC)My experience with the GWB route mentioned above is that it tends ot be about the same, on avereage, but even more vairable than the southerly route.
One reasnable alterantive is the Goethels to Turnpike exit 13. There's usually a backup getting on to the bridge eastbound but not westbound. I'd bet it's your fastest route, but not by much.

Date: 2004-05-06 08:21 pm (UTC)Neilson-George-Church sounds like the directions that the map sites were giving me.
Thank you!

Date: 2004-05-06 11:58 pm (UTC)And yes, the Playhouse is leftwards from 27 South. So left on Neilson is the way to go.
Although, if I remember aright, the good parking lot for the Playhouse area is on either Bayard or Liberty, a couple blocks -past- Church. (Between Neilson and George.) So you can take Neilson right down to the parking lot, and avoid George St. traffic.
Eek! I'm a Jersey-dweller expounding on driving routes! Somebody tranquilize me please...

Date: 2004-05-07 03:39 am (UTC)No, I'm not going to the Playhouse; I'm going to a job interview-ish thingy.
Parking would be useful. Thanks.

I *work* in New Brunswick. Want to do dinner when you're done? :)

Date: 2004-05-07 03:43 am (UTC)I'm not sure the budget allows lunch/dinner this week...things are kinda tight til payday, next Friday.
If I'm understanding correctly, I'm to take 514 to 27 to New Brunswick, turn left onto Nielson, then turn onto Church and then to George? Or did I just confuse that.

Date: 2004-05-07 12:53 pm (UTC)yup, she's right: 440 intersects with US Route One South
nears Fords/Edison, NJ, just south of Woodbridge and Perth Amboy, NJ.
Here, Route One is quite near the Turnpike, and she's have to exit the
TP onto Route One, or take NJTP Exit 9 to Route 18/Memorail parkway (see
below). I personally think it's more direct to take Route One, but it's
less well marked (partly residential).
Follow Route One South. . . take Route 18/Memorial Parkway into New
Brunswick (away from the Turnpike) and follow to the marked George St.
exit. This will dump her in the midst of downtown, NJ, by Johnson and
Johnson and Johnson, toward the train station, on Albany St. Here's the
trick: she can't turn left onto George from Albany. So if she's going
to a restaurant or something on George, that's toward the left from
Albany St. if she's going toward the Rutgers Queens (College Ave.)
campus, then she'd want to turn right. If you know exactly where she's
going, I'll be happy to provide exact directions and parking info.
