I don't know if you happen to be a WWdN reader, but he wrote several entries about his cats being sick. My favorite, because he said it better than I could have, is one where he talks about sitting down with his cat and saying "Are you ready to leave us? I don't want you to go, and if you don't want to go, I'll do whatever I can to keep you. But if you're ready, let me know." And then he just waited for a sign.
To some extent, it's us projecting onto them...but it's a good projection, I think...and it does seem like they understand sometimes.
