Slightly Less Depressing Cat Post

One of my biggest worries as Oblivion became more ill, and as it became time to put her down was my concern for Beta. He's lived with her since he left his littermates at just a few weeks old. She's taken care of him since then, in little ways, like grooming his face.
Last time we took her to the vet, he slept in front of the door all day, not in any of his usual spots, waiting for her to come home. This morning, as we were preparing to take her to the vet, he sat on top of the carrier with her in it. Then he sat in front of it, and sniffed at her through the bars. I picked him up, hugged him, stroked him and told him that he was in charge now, because she wasn't coming home.
He's been very calm all day....sitting with me on the couch, purring, sleeping. He knew she was sick. I think he also knows she's gone-she had lost a great deal of weight, she had a serious infection and she was dehydrated. He's sat next to me for most of the day. I'm grateful for his company and the human company I've had today. I hope he's okay and that he doesn't miss her too much.
