Cayne and I took a trip to the social security office this morning. My experience was relatively painless, barring the three and a half hours of waiting around in lines. (I can't understand why Social Security doesn't allow appointments for general business. It would probably be far more efficient. INS/USCIS/whoevertheyaretoday does that, and it's often an in and out deal.)

Cayne, on the other hand...that's a different story.

The background: Cayne is having issues because somehow, the credit bureaus all seem to have an incorrect social security number. We have to provide all kinds of documentation, which includes a copy of his social security card in order to straighten this out. Cayne has no idea where his original card is, so a trip to the social security office was in order to replace it.

Today's adventure:

We arrive early at the social security office, paperwork filled out, all ready to go. We wait in line for a long time, as we expected. We finally reach the front of the line. My paperwork was processed rather efficiently at that point. Cayne's story is rather different. He had a properly filled out form. He had all the proper documentation. He had his passport, with his H1B stamp in it. And yet...no reissued card. Why not?

Someone, somewhere, has his visa type still recorded as B1. Yes, he came here on a B1 visa, for a little while. His first H1B was issued four and a half or five years ago. His second H1B was issued in 2003. There's no B1 stamp in his passport. And apparently it takes eight weeks for the social securuity to get together with USCIS and confirm that in fact Cayne is on an H1B visa.

I'm frustrated. And annoyed. And disturbed. Cayne is here legally, with proper documentation, and somewhere, the government, who claimed, in the post 9/11 frenzy to be worried about making sure everyone was here legally, and document properly, it's still not right.

Dealing with government is incredibly frustrating. I hope this gets taken care of very quickly. Good luck!

(I have had incredibly terrible experiences with Social Security as well - you have to say things in their language or its nigh impossible to get anything accomplished)

Somehow I've missed your icon. May I steal it with proper credits?

Wow, that is an ordeal I hope to never experience. My mom has been fighting with the Social Security Administration for almost five years over benefits. Some of the stuff they get away with is insane.
