How was my day, you ask?

We went to deal with giving the third semen sample today. And, when we were locked in the bathroom,
with
zedrikcayne's pants down, sitting on our blanket, suddenly the door swung open, and a man who appeared to be in his 60s or 70s walked in, took note of the two of us on the floor and said, "You really should wait until you get home to fool around."
Cayne looked up at the guy-I was far too embarassed, to say anything, and explained what we were doing. The man walked past us to the toilet, went to the bathroom, washed his hands, and then left. Cayne and I had a moment of terrible embarassment, he then got up, checked the door, and we had a few moments of absolute horror together, where the moment had been totally spoiled. We finish up with our business, clean up, return the sample to the lab, discuss the fact that if there's a problem with this sample, we'll have to come back and do it again, but that we should let the doctor know in advance what happened, just in case.
As we were exiting through the waiting room, the man again saw us, looked up and said "Good luck." It was just so unnecessary.
I will be so glad when it's done.

Date: 2007-03-06 02:53 am (UTC)It was mortifying, yes. And I'm sure that we'll have a good laugh about it with the urologist next time we see him (he ended up in a similar situation and told us how he gave many semen samples at UPenn.) I was amazed that he could do it too. I would have been perfectly okay with him saying "I can't do it today. We need to come back in a few days."
Good luck with ttc. It's been a roller coaster of highs and lows for us, but I think we're stronger as a couple for having been through it. Let me know if I can lend an ear.

Date: 2007-03-06 03:02 am (UTC)This is our first month actually trying, but it's something I've wanted desperately pretty much forever, so while we've wanted to have a good amount of "just us" time since we got married in August, it's been very very hard.
How long had you been trying when you starting testing the swimmers?

Date: 2007-03-06 03:25 am (UTC)In 2005 I went off the pill and got pregnant about four months after I did. I had a miscarriage in April of 2006, the cause is unknown, but the suspicion is that ovarian cysts interfered with the development of the placenta. After the ovarian cysts were diagnosed I went back on the pill and was diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) in September. I went off the pill in Septmber, and on metformin, and we've been pretty much trying since then. My doctor would like to prescribe Clomid in April when I see him again, and so, we're testing the swimmers now before I start any fertility drugs. If there's an issue with them, it can affect what our choice of drugs is, or even what route we go, whether we consider IUI or IVF sooner rather than later. All told, I suppose it ads up to about 8 or 9 months in two separate stretches. The usual guideline if you're not dealing with a fertility issue is a year, but we know we're dealing with issues, so we're going through the testing a bit sooner.

Date: 2007-03-06 03:31 am (UTC)Wow, that has to be beyond frustrating. I can't even imagine how hard that must be. How do you stay sane month after month? Definitely no need to wait when there are known issues, it's good that your doctor is in agreement and trying to get all the information up front. Do you temp?

Date: 2007-03-06 04:16 am (UTC)I temp most months, although sometimes I get too sad or frustrated. I've also used OPKs to check on ovulation. As sad as it is that I'm not pregnant this month, I neither temped nor used OPKs and managed to pinpoint ovulation and when my period would arive without either, which kind of made up for it. Not exactly, but a tiny bit.
Sometimes it's frustrating, sometimes it's sad, sometimes it's disheartening, sometimes it makes me angry, sometimes I feel disempowered, but I have a fantastic spouse, a loving girlfriend, and friends who are more supportive than I deserve.
