It's time for another poll
Jan. 13th, 2008 08:45 pmMany weeks ago, my mother informed me that this baby is a girl, and I should just not bother to worry about boy names for the baby. This week, my in-laws are in town and my mother in law informed me that she had a dream a few weeks ago, sat up in the middle of the night declared that Cayne was having a son and so this baby is a boy. We of course, still don't know, and thus have been working on names for boys and for girls.
So, based on the following information (facts we know from ultrasound and "old wives tales") I'm just curious about what you think.
What we do know:
The baby has a set of genitals that appear to be "typical" on ultrasound.
The baby's heart rate has consistently been above 140 (OWT-A heart rate above 140 depending on who you ask indicates that the baby is female.)
My skin has been relatively clear throughout the whole pregnancy-a few pimples early on, but no major breakouts. (OWT-girl babies steal the mother's looks during pregnancy.)
I appear to be carrying the baby lower in the abdomen, rather than high up and out in front. (OWT-Low down is supposed to be a boy, high up in front is a girl)
I've gained no weight in my face (OWT-With a girl, weight gain is visible in the face, with a boy it isn't.)
I've not gotten rounder/larger in the butt or hips (OWT-Gain in front means a girl, gain in the back means a boy)
Cayne is not gaining weight (OWT-Dad gains weight if it's a boy, but not if it's a girl.)
I do not eat the heel of the bread (OWT-Eating the heel of the bread means a boy.)
My cravings have been mostly for sweet things. (OWT-Girl babies make the cravings sweet, boy babies make them sour.)
My feet are not any colder than before I was pregnant. (OWT-cold feet during pregnancy means a boy. No change means a girl.)
My pillow faces north. (OWT-North facing pillows mean a boy, south facing means a girl.)
My legs are not any hairier than before I was pregnant. (OWT-hairier legs mean a boy.)
My nose has not changed during pregnancy. (OWT-a spreading nose means a boy.)
My boobs have not grown dramatically during pregnancy. (OWT-Dramatic changes to the size of the boobies means a girl.)
The Chinese gender prediction calendars (which use lunar age at time of conception and the month you conceived in) predict that the baby is a girl.
In other words, based on "Old Wives Tales" and the Chinese Gender Prediction Calendar (which claims an incredibly high rate of accuracy,) we're 8 to 5 in favor of a girl, I think.
I have not done the wedding ring test or the Draino test.
If you do answer the poll, I'd love to know why you picked the answer(s) you did. Just curious. I'm not voting because I freely admit to having no idea-I thought girl at first, then boy, then girl, and so I'm just not sure.

Date: 2008-01-14 03:14 am (UTC)Course what's in there is human. It just feels like a yeti when it's dancing on you bladder. :)
I voted for before your due date but mean just before. You'll be ready. seems mean to say after or elephant (I'm ever so glad we aren't elephants).

Date: 2008-01-14 04:32 am (UTC)We had our 20 week ultrasound just before we went to New York for Thanksgiving. My sister's birthday is at the beginning of November and she was frothing at the mouth to know whether this baby is a boy or a girl (she wanted to know more than I do.) So for her birthday I got her a card and an ITunes gift card and we took the card to the OB's office, where we had the sonogram. Lynn wrote the answer in the birthday card, included a couple of pictures, and sealed it, and we gave it to her on Thanksgiving.

Date: 2008-01-14 05:21 am (UTC)Yes, it has been ages since we've seen each other. Let's make real plans to get together soon- before you burst!

Date: 2008-01-14 05:48 am (UTC)We do need to make plans soon. I'm supposed to be away during the last week of January, but I'm pretty well home for the duration other than that. I'm travel restricted after the end of January/beginning of February-no more than 4 hours from the hospital for February and no more than two hours from the beginning of March until delivery.

Date: 2008-01-14 03:51 am (UTC)Plus I don't trust ultrasound; you can just ask my brother Maureen.

Date: 2008-01-14 04:51 am (UTC)I'm hoping that the baby comes a wee bit earlier than the due date but obviously not too early. 38 weeks sounds just lovely. But only if sie is ready to come out.
Do you think it's weird that I couldn't care less about the sex of other people's babies*? I mean, I care about the babies, but I don't have an opinion one way or the other. But I do care about learning what mine is.
(*There was one tiny possible exception where I cared because said person and I had a baby name in common and I didn't want it to get weird...but the baby ended up being a boy, so it worked out just fine.)

Date: 2008-01-14 05:14 am (UTC)I admit to liking the name we're likely to use for a girl better than a boy, but if I didn't like the top choice boy name it wouldn't have made the list.

Date: 2008-01-14 04:52 am (UTC)I'll be interested to see this post revisited with an accounting of how the old wives tales hold up, and the chinese prediction one, too.

Date: 2008-01-14 05:17 am (UTC)I will certainly revisit this with an accounting at some point after the birth. And I will also need to make note of the heartburn-hair correlation too. (They've actually proved this one to be valid though-mothers who have significant amounts of heartburn during pregnancy are more likely to give birth to babies with a lot of hair.)

Date: 2008-01-14 03:00 pm (UTC)i had terrible heartburn with chase & he had more hair than a "typical baby" might have, but posthaste had very little heartburn with ally & that child came out with a ridiculous amount of hair. of course, she's got to be an anomaly...

Date: 2008-01-14 06:00 am (UTC)as for the OWT for sweet/salty cravings, it was the opposite for my mom - she craved brie with me and orange Kool-Aid with my brother. And the weird thing is that I ended up loving brie (I'm eating it right now) and Tim spent his childhood addicted to orange Kool-Aid.

Date: 2008-01-14 06:09 am (UTC)As for my sister, Mom has been adamant about not finding out from her-she's afraid she might accidentally slip up and tell us if she knows, so she's opted not to find out.
My sister likes to hold it over my head though, and claim that if I'm not nice to her she'll tell me. I respond with "usually someone tries to withhold information, you know."

Date: 2008-01-14 07:08 am (UTC)I picked yeti, by which of course I mean: a boy who you might mistake for a yeti now an then during the teen years.

Date: 2008-01-14 02:58 pm (UTC)i've always heard the OWTs that girls steal a mother's beauty & they make you more nauseous. i, like you, had a few breakouts early on & clearer skin than i've had in my life the rest of the pregnancy (so far, knock wood - it's awesome), am just now gaining weight (but out front), colder feet, my leg hair is growing ridiculously slow... :D
it'll be fun to see who pops out in april!

Date: 2008-01-17 02:03 am (UTC)But really, you should have added "alien" to the list of options. I'm pretty sure that's what mine is at least.

Date: 2008-01-20 03:57 am (UTC)Another way to "predict" is to go to a psychic sensitive and have them look at your aura. Pink auras for girls, blue auras for boys. So troll all your psychic friends and have them squint at your aura.
