We've been watching the Olympics for the last ten days or so, and we watched last night's men's beach volleyball gold medal match. We also watched the women's match the other night.

Upon the conclusion of the match, the two men who won embraced and celebrated.

[livejournal.com profile] zedrikcayne's comment on last night's win? "That's not nearly as hot as when the women won."

I just want to know why the women play in bikinis and the men in tank tops and shorts.

The chicks know what will get them, uh, exposure.

The women wear skimpy uniforms because they have to. In 2000, the rules for olympic beach volleyball were changed to include a maximum size for the women's uniforms.

Tell me it wasn't a bunch of dudes who came up with THAT brilliant idea.

How does having less body covering allow women to play the game the same way as men who can wear more clothing?

Seriously, what century is this?!

I suspect tighter clothing helps the players and the number of square inches doesn't matter. So the women's clothing is advantageous. But I also suspect the choices were made by officials who wanted to maximize TV ratings for both genders, regardless of (to them) overly abstract questions of ethics and what century it is.

My guess is that skimpier clothing on the women will have little affect on the number of woman fans while increasing the number of men. But past a certain point, skimpier clothing on the men would decrease the number of male fans more than it would increase the number of female fans.

And I still think the decision was wrong.

I suppose tighter clothing would help, but I don't believe bikini bottoms help them in the least -- especially when I see them tugging the wedgies out of their butts after a couple plays. Seriously, biker shorts would have been just as good.

On that note, I still am surprised by how skimpy the men's diving uniforms are. At the velocity with which they hit the water, I am surprised it doesn't rip right off. I suppose they can't have longer outfits as part of the judging focuses so intently upon the body's form and it's maybe harder to see leg separation in a pike position, for example, if they're wearing long spandex swim trunks. Still, those things are TEENY. But I'll admit, I don't mind terribly much. :) I suppose that's what I get for bitching about the volleyball outfits...

There was actually a snippet about this on NPR last week:

According to Holly McPeak, bikinis are actually more comfortable because there are less places for sand to get into.
