Tonight, the three of us headed out to try a new place for dinner-I wanted to check it out for the next Mom's Night Out, and so we arranged to meet some friends who live near the restaurant and check it out. We piled into the car and set out on our way.

We're two, maybe two and a half miles from home, sitting at a traffic light, talking about the boundaries of Bergen County New Jersey, when all of a sudden "THUMP" and someone has rear ended our car. We pull off to the side, check the car (no damage-we're all fine...the baby didn't even notice) and I just lose it. The MamaRage at the thought of someone's carelessness (she was fussing with her purse or something) hurting my baby just took over and if I had less self control, I think I could have seriously harmed this person.

It was amazing, and came from somewhere that I can't even describe. It was rather terrifying to feel it.

Stay tuned for my annual exaltation of small business people...I still love the guy who comes to my house to do the termite inspection.

So - did you say the F-word? How many times . .

Stop me if you've heard this, but I'm not sure I ever told you about the almost-overwhelming urge I had in the delivery room to deck the nurse who took my kid and poked his heel to make him bleed! His own blood!

I think there was a similar moment when poor Henry rolled himself off the bed when he was about nine months or so. A little blood and I wanted to tear the world limb from limb.

On the other hand when I was rear-ended, Henry was in the back and about 3 years old; he cheerily hung out while the other driver and I exchanged details. Things change.

Ah, yes... the adrenaline spike of protective Mommy rage. I am well familiar with it. ;)

While not exactly pleasant, it has its evolutionary place. We are protective of our cubs, and when we perceive a threat to them, we are more likely to react with protective wrath.

Mama rage is a good and useful thing. I am glad it was minor and you are all safe.
