Can I get off this ride?
Dec. 8th, 2009 05:57 pmNeurologist #1 was gloom and doom about my brother. Neurologist #2 was less gloom and doom. The EEGs looked fine, the MRI showed damage that appears to be old damage not new damage...in other words, my brother apparently had a mini-stroke at some point. The impairment (cognitive, speech and movement) is, according to neurologist #2 like the waves on the beach-that all the sedation and everything else that's happened in the last month has unsettled things and it needs to reorganize itself, but that there should be significant improvement.
Friday and Saturday he was animated, trying to talk, moving his hands and arms, though he was pretty disoriented. Since then, he's deteriorated. He's become less animated, less responsive, not moving, not really talking. When he does talk, it doesn't make a lot of sense, unless he's talking about his dog.
There was some concern about vomiting...he was coughing up phlegm and no one was suctioning him, and he really couldn't spit it out, so he'd swallow it, then he'd throw up. And so yesterday, they gave him no food by mouth. Unfortunately, someone also neglected to make sure he got nutrition or hydration via IV as well, and despite my mother being at the hospital all day-while three different doctors were on duty, not once did anyone talk to her, even after repeated requests.
Today they put him back on the ventilator. His right lung is collapsing. He's running a fever again. They've scheduled a tracheostomy for Wednesday or Thursday. No one knows what's up with the neurological stuff.
The whole thing just has me so angry.

Date: 2009-12-08 11:29 pm (UTC)I said a Mi Shebeirach for him at synagogue last Friday. I mean, I was too shy to actually stand up and announce his name, but I said it in my head. Hopefully that counts. :\
